Story of the house

This home was built in 1876 by my great grandfather

In the year 1876, Dimitris Skopelitis left his home island Symi to settle on Donoussa. He built this house to accommodate his family. He used natural Donoussian materials; stone, wood, sand and seaweed. His wife Maria blessed him with 13 children who grew up in this house and then spread out all over the Cyclades. Their days were full of fishing, working on their land and tending to their animals.

Dimitris Skopelitis passed the house on to his daughter, Evangelia Skopeliti. She passed it on to her son, Dimitris, named for her father. Dimitris or Mimis or uncle Mitsos or Tzitzis was my father and that is how this beautiful home came to me.

After almost one and a half centuries, signs of aging were obvious around the house. You could see and even feel it’s history. With love and respect I started to renovate the house. My goal was to create a special home combining traditional Donoussian architecture with modern comforts.

The eternal comfort of simplicity

The house is located up on a small road in the heart of the historical area of the village Stavros. When you wake up you can easily make your first refreshing dive in the clear blue sea and let the water clean your face and body. It’s only 1 minute from the beach!

You can prepare your breakfast, lunch or dinner in the well equipped kitchen. If you wish you can also choose to visit one of the restaurants in the area. They are all so close to you. Read your favorite book under the shade of the balcony or take an afternoon nap on the built-in pillow bed.

Let your eyes travel over the history of this house by observing the architectural details; thick stone walls, the 4,2m high ceiling, the beam across the top of the main room, the traditional large windows. Enjoy the friendly neighborhood, explore the island by walking the paths or by taking Ilias Skopelitis boat around Donoussa’s coast line. Create your own personal memories on this amazing small island.
